Harokopio University of Athens (HUA) is a flexible and dynamic University specializing in issues related to quality of life and sustainability, including all aspects of waste management. It ranks third in Greece in terms of the ratio of scientific publications to member of teaching staff. Over the past ten years more than 300 research projects were completed, once more placing HUA among the top institutions in the country in terms of the ratio of research projects to member of teaching staff. Through those programs, HUA has created an extensive, high-quality network of partnerships with other academic and research institutions and the private sector, both in Greece and abroad.
In chronological order of establishment, Harokopio University of Athens is the 18th university of Greece. It was established by virtue of Article 9 of Law 1894/90 as amended by Article 17 of Law 1966/91 on the initiative of Professor Georgios Karabatzos (deceased in 2011).
The University's design and organization has been based on international standards and on a scientific study conducted by the Institute of Regional Development of Panteion University ordered by the then Minister for Education.
Harokopio University of Athens started operating in the academic year 1993-1994.
Today the University has four undergraduate departments: Department of Home Economics and Ecology (created in 1993), Department of Dietetics and Nutritional Science (crated in 1994), Department of Geography (created in 2000) and Department of Informatics and Telematics (created in 2007). There are also four graduate programs: Sustainable Development, Applied Dietetics and Nutrition, Applied Geography and Spatial Management and Education and Culture.
